I reckon we're looking west down the TP&W. Depot was in the SW quadrant; tower in the NE. Credit: 1940, Illinois Clearinghouse

321 on the curve at Sheldon Illinois early 1997 on a nice sunny day. This curve had been super elevated so Big 4 passenger trains could take it at 60 mph.
Phil Boldman: Elevation was 6 inch. But some has been taken out but it is still super elevated.
Phil Boldman: It felt strange on a hi rail to lean that far at slow speed.
John Meade: The speed through Sheldon would have been restricted to 30 MPH, Medium speed, at the TP&W diamond. The 60 MPH track speed on the edge of town reflexes the ability of steam engines to accelerate at a much more rapid rate than diesels. Dispatcher's sheets show a running time between Sheldon and Sheff of 5 minutes. So with the 30 MPH restriction at each interlocking the eight miles between would have to be covered at over 100 MPH.

Back in the day when rail service was the lifeline of almost every small town in the Midwest.
1906 and the 'Big Four' train is arriving at the Sheldon depot in east central Iroquois County. Somewhat of a forgotten flag of the past, the 'Big Four' was the nickname given to the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis Railway. Don't know if we've got enough time to visit the Lunch Room over the tracks for a lemonade before train time.
