I picked this overview photo because it shows how it was nestled up against a hill to make it easier to dump material into the top.
"The area was ideally suited to iron production, having rich ore deposits, flowing streams that could drive bellows, and a large forest that could supply charcoal. From 1775 to 1903, iron companies mined the rich ore banks near Catoctin Mountain, smelted it in furnaces, and cast both raw pig iron and iron implements of every description." This blast furnace was "Isabella." It was the second of three blast furnaces built at this location. It operated between 1857 and 1893. [CatoctinFurnace]

My home town of Thurmont Maryland near Camp David has a old iron furnace and cannon ball furnace. It’s called Catoctin furnace and it’s located in Catoctin Mountain Park, there’s information on Facebook about it. Here’s a couple pictures from back in the day and what it looks like today."
