Dubuque, IA: Museum/CB&Q/CB&N Depot & Freight House and William M. Black Steamboat

CB&N = Chicago, Burlington & Northern Railway The CB&N merged into the CB&Q in 1899.

Note that this has the typical freight house design of a long one-story freight handling building with lots of doors and a two-story office building on the end.

It looks like the steamboat is part of the museum. It was a dredge for the USACE.

Paul Schmidt: Worked around there around that time for BN track department. There was a station with an operator in Dubuque and a switch engine that also came across the river to East Dubuque area to work where we were most of the time. There had been a small CB&Q passenger station at East Dubuque still standing but it was closed after the demise of the Zephyr trains.

The mainline of the CB&Q from Chicago went up the east side of the Mississippi River. But obviously they had trackage rights on the IC bridge to get to their CB&N route.

The CB&N depot is shown as it looked in 1891. The depot was remodeled in 1945-1946.

I need to add the River Museum to the list of the Dubuque Star Brewing Co., the shot tower and the bridges as some of the reasons to visit this town.
