David Schauer posted Beer Departure... DM&IR 332 departs Duluth Union Depot with a beer tasting train for Palmers. October 11, 2024 |
"For the first few decades, in its heyday, it was servicing over 50 trains daily." It was closed in 1969. It was remodeled in the 1970s. [GoDuluthMN]
John J Kulidas posted Sunday Afternoon Gopher at Duluth MN Sept 1968 Skip Nelson snapped this shot in 1968. The GN 502 is snaking through the puzzle of switches at the west end of the Duluth Union Depot complex on its way to Superior, and eventually, St. Paul. Look closely at the sign board on the RPO behind E7A 502. That's an Empire Builder car. In the latter years of the Badger/Gopher runs it wasn't unusual to find one of these in Empire Builder cars being used on this run through Minnesota and Wisconsin. Twin ports railroad history by Jeff Lemkie. Dave Bruckelmyer: I rode the Gophers morning counterpart, the Badger, from Minneapolis to Duluth with my best friend during the summer of 1964. My best friend’s dad was going on fishing trip to the North Shore of Lake Superior and paced our train in a car with a bunch of his buddies from work. The Badger made stops in every small town (unlike the Gopher which was more of an express train) all the way to Duluth. The slow pace of the train allowed the car to pull way ahead, so about every 5th stop the guys in the car would stop at a beer joint and wait for us to catch up. When the train pulled to a stop, they would come out of the beer joints with beers in hand and wave at us through the windows of the train. What a hoot! |

1 of 16 photos posted by Michael Maitland, most of them are interior views of the museum Duluth, Minn, has a fantastic railroad museum. Part is a recreation of Duluth at the turn of the century and the other part is usually sold out steam and diesel excursion trains. The "Milwaukee and Copper River" has a presence at the museum. Recommended for a bucket list. Bonus is boat watching and other museums and the aquarium. Descriptions on the photo page. Downtown Duluth once had three major passenger terminals. Not sure if the Milwaukee sent any passenger cars here, but they did have trackage rights over the NP to the dock area. |
