Bill Molony posted This is a post card picture of the Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad's depot in Chicago Heights. [I used the photo provided by David Daruszka.] Bill Halpin The station was located behind the Old Chicago Heights Public Library and was used by the South Suburban and Greyhound Bus Line until late 60's. The CEI Danville Flyer used the Steger Station for Chicago Heights Passengers. [Another comment indicated that Steger was used because stopping trains in the Heights was disruptive to the downtown businesses.] |
Bill Molony posted Another post card picture of the Chicago & Eastern Illinois station in Chicago Heights. |
David Daruszka also provided this photo as a comment. Peter Zimmermann posted Northbound Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad passenger train arrives at the depot. The main depot building still exists but otherwise the station area is long gone. The railroad still exists today, jointly owned by the Union Pacific Railroad and CSX Transportation. |
Bill Molony posted The Chicago & Eastern Illinois depot at Chicago Heights. Bill posted again Larry Behl Good memories of that place. One summer when my parents took me to the Heights to visit moms sister I stayed for a week and took the RDC back to Villa Grove. When I started to get on as an 8 year old I ask if the train went to VG and conductor called be by name and said it sure does and you dad will be waiting for you. Dad worked on the C&EI. That’s when railroads were family. Christopher Gobert Reminds me of the time I think I was 8 then too when taking the IC from Carbondale to visit my grandparents near Kankakee. I sat glued to the window ticking off the stations on my schedule, being worried that I would miss the stop and end up by myself in downtown Chicago. Years later I learned that my grandfather (who also worked for the C&EI) had made sure the conductor was keeping an eye on me. |
William Shapotkin posted Believe it or not, the C&EI once operated suburban rail service out of Chicago as far south as Momence, IL. Here is an undated photo of the Chicago Heights station (located south of 16th St). At the time of this photo, this station served only intercity trains. Today, the Chicago Heights Police station stands on this same site today. View looks E-N/E in this undated station. John Timm Complete with a Studebaker and what looks to maybe be a Hudson beyond. If not, just a photo with a Studebaker will suffice. Christian Goepel Wasn’t aware of CEI suburban service. What year was it discontinued? David Schnell Christian Goepel It did not last past 1935. Bill Downes Pic is 1948-49-50 Bill Duncan posted Dennis DeBruler: Others have identified this as the C&EI depot in Chicago Heights, IL. The land is now used by the police station: https://www.google.com/maps/@41.5017611,-87.6361346,313m/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu Jim Kelling shared |
Bill Duncan posted two photos with the comment: "The C&EI train station and combination Greyhound bus depot and cab stand in downtown Chicago Heights, IL in the mid 1950’s. The building in the background of the track-side photo, behind the bus, is the Chicago Heights public library which was gifted to the city by Andrew Carnegie. Both buildings have been demolished, as has virtually the entire downtown area, and replaced with a police station. The news stand inside the train station had a good selection of gentlemen’s magazines. Or so I’ve been told. ;>)
The first photo was taken looking South and the second photo is looking East."
