Kankakee, IL: NS/NYC (Kankakee Belt) Railroad Yards

Looking at an old aerial map, it is obvious that the engine service facilities were in the northwest quadrant of the junction of the Kankakee Belt with the IC and that the classification yard was to the west of those facilities.

But if you look at a satellite view, the current yards are west of town.

Looking at that area in the aerial photo we see that they had already built that yard in 1939.

Note that the engine service area in the top photo has a turntable with no associated building and another turntable with most of the roundhouse stalls removed. But I could not find any evidence of a replacement engine service facility in the new yard on the west side of town.

In fact, the yard west of town was built before 1922.

From The Daily Journal, Kankakee Belt Route, sub of NYC. 1971. Now a ghost town under the NS.
[There are quite a few comments about allowing NS and CSX to chop up Conrail.]

Looking at the 1939 aerial photo, I thought the freight house was north of the yard just east of Entrance Avenue. But the following post indicates it was east of 5th Avenue.

Steve Drassler posted two photos with the comment: "Two NYC F-units on spot at the Kankakee, Illinois freight house located on North Fifth Avenue and across the street from the old Three-I/NYC depot. Date unknown, probably late 1950's or early 1960's. The building is still standing on the east side of Fifth, just north of the NS tracks. The old NYC depot is gone, having burned down in 1967."

The freight house would have been the brick building. Note all of the freight doors along the side.
