This depot was built when Santa Fe came to town in 1887. It was replaced in the 1960s with a modern building because some of the powers-that-be in Galesburg wanted a newer station. [TomWilson]
Roger Kujawa posted two images with the comment: "Two different postcard views of the Santa Fe Depot in Galesburg, Illinois."

Dennis DeBruler commented on Roger's post The town square makes it easy to correlate then (1940) and now. 1940 Aerial Photo from ILHAP |
An alternative scan of the first postcard.
Bill Molony posted This is a post card picture of the Santa Fe depot in Galesburg from about 1914. |
Another colorization of the second postcard.
Illinois Central Railroad Scrapbook posted The backside reads: SANTA FE DEPOT GALESBURG, ILLINOIS 1889-1964 This passenger and freight depot on North Broad Street was dedicated by the Santa Fe Railway on July 20, 1889. Constructed of red sandstone with an interior finished in oak, it was razed after a smaller glass and steel structure was erected in 1964. |
At some point, it lost its octagonal tower.
The new one was opened in Dec, 1964 [TomWilson] and torn down in July, 2004 [KansasMemory].
The Southwest Chief used this station until Amtrak moved that train to the former CB&Q route between Chicago and Galesburg because it did not want to pay, if I remember correctly, $100,000 for its share of maintaining a bridge in Chicago. This station was designated GBA and the other Amtrak station in town was designated CBB. [TrainOrders]
