The former Buhler Mill location in Inman Kansas was located on the former CRIP (Rock Island) mainline which is the short route from the upper Midwest to Arizona and Southern California. ADM operated this location until about 20 years ago. It is currently an independent grain elevator operating the elevator but not the mill. The Union Pacific operates the rail line.
Global Earth had good resolution images east of town, but none of the dates had good images of the town. I was trying to determine if the current building was the mill or if the mill building was somewhere else. Historic Aerials goes back to just 1991, and that image is nothing to brag about.

ADM flour mill & elevator @ Inman, KS in 1989. Mill dates from 1892. Bought the property from Nabisco in 1982 until closing in 2000. Jim Jackson was head miller. He worked @ Cargill in Newton w/me for a yr until going to Inman. Boxcars in scene would be loaded w/export flour shipping to Gulf Coast. Inman was on the Cotton Belt rr. Mill would be switched by the. Herington-Pratt local until the job changed to a Hutchinson-McPherson turn Interesting fun fact here is Walters many yrs ago produced a HO scale ADM mill. Nothing has been said but that scale model building sure resembles the real thing @ Inman |

The mural depicts the importance of the Turkey Red hard winter wheat varieties the Mennonite settlers brought from Russia over 150 years ago. Photographed 7/7/24. My post in March 2024 detailed the contractors and owners of the elevators in Inman."

Jerry Krug commented on Bob's post I caught this elevator on June 25, 2016 during my first Kansas exploration. A unit train of covered hopper cars was passing it at the moment. |
