On July 30, 2018, the grain dryer exploded and burned. There were no injuries. The last street view trip down this road was 2011, so they still have photos of it before the explosion.

This post is how I learned about the explosion.
Thomas Dyrek posted The elevator at Cruger as it appeared in 2016 before the explosion and demolition. Thomas Dyrek photo. |
It was the grain dryer that exploded. [PowderBulkSolids]

I tried searching for this post on Facebook to see the other seven photos, but I could not find it.

Video of the explosion taken from Countryside Barns. I'm still trying to figure out how smoke quickly travelled to the west side so that it came out of the roof of a bin.

I'm surprised that it still looks intact in the satellite image because normally those images are less than five years old.

Some of the photos on Google Maps imply they tore down just the older part of the concrete silos. But this shows that they got rid of all of the concrete silos. They had already installed enough steel bins to make the silos obsolete anyhow.

Since the satellite image, they have added a big ground pile.
Ben Fehr posted two photos with the comment: "Grainland Co-Op SW10 moves covered hoppers for loading at Cruger, IL while a power consist of three BNSF GE ES44s waits at the east end of the yard. July 8th, 2024."

John Gardner posted Sitting at Cruger Just dropped off a unit train it appears. Chip Gay: Also is this section of track on tpw one of only places where all 6 class 1s can send trains? Harold J. Krewer: Any railroad can send trains to Cruger (and Cruger can send trains to any other railroad) as long as TP&W is paid for the portion of the move over its rails. Christopher Westley: Cool photo. When a unit train is dropped off, does that mean that the elevator's locomotives handle the loading of the unit train? Thanks in advance, Chris |
