Marion, OH: Whirlpool Plant and Co-op/Bunge/Central Soya Grain Elevators

(Satellite)

The tracks on the north side are a remnant of the Erie that CSX retained because of the yard. CSX's through route here is the Big Four tracks on the south side of the plant.

As the sun pokes through the clouds, Q560 rolls past the Whirlpool factory in Marion, Ohio on May 15, 2021.
This stretch of the Mt. Victory Subdivision is between CP 105 and the diamonds at CP 101 and CP102. Crew changes often occur at Campbell Road which is in the grade crossing in the background.
In the background is the CSX Marion Yard, which before Conrail, was part of the Erie mainline that went through Marion and continues to the North West but has since been turned into a hiking trail.

I've documented the closures of so many plants that used to make appliances that I wondered if any were still made in America. So I was glad to see this photo.

While researching my 2005 SPV Map for the railroad names, I noticed it marked Central Soya on the east side of town. That map doesn't mark too many industries, so I checked it out.

Google Maps labels it Central Ohio Farmers Co-op. But the sign out front shows it was owned by Bunge. But Bunge must have sold the plant because a Jun 2015 photo shows a sign with the Co-op name.

I wonder how much the long building holds compared to the two concrete silo elevators.

So is this liquid product some sort of fertilizer or soybean oil? Actually, it may be diesel fuel. This must have been just a grain elevator for Central Soya to help supply their soybean processing plants in other towns.

Given the various sidings by the buildings and the long siding along the CSX main, the plant must have its own switcher to handle a unit train. Sure enough, I found their little center-cab locomotive.
