Toledo, OH: Hallett Tower: Ann Arbor and PM+Pennsy vs. Toledo Terminal

(Satellite)

Street View, May 2019
The tracks on the left side are for (AA+CN+NS)/Ann Arbor. The tracks in the left background coming in from the west are (CSX+NS)/Toledo Terminal. The tracks on the right side are CSX/PM+PRR to the north and CSX/TT to the south. (PRR using PM tracks must have been interesting because PM was bought by C&O.)

The reason the tower is still staffed is because it also houses the CTC control for Ann Arbor; it is not just an junction tower.

On December 29, 1979 we see a westbound N&W train lead by the N&W 1370 at Hallett tower in Toledo, Ohio. Hallett was an Ann Arbor RR tower, which controlled an interlocking with the C&O (former PM), the Toledo Terminal Railroad, and the PRR had joint track here with the AA. This N&W train operated daily in both directions from Homestead Yard on Toledo's east side over the AA to Milan, Michigan, where it got on the N&W (former Wabash) and ran into Oakwood Yard in Melvindale, MI a Detroit area Downriver community. Whenever there was a problem with this route, this N&W train would operate over the D&TSL. (C. H. Geletzke, Jr. photo)

Mark Egebrecht: So he is running on the AA? Where does the TT cross?
Jeffrey Dobek: Mark Egebrecht The N&W train is heading north (westbound by the Ann Arbor timetable) on the AA, having passed Ottawa Yard. The Toledo Terminal is the single track crossing in the foreground.

My first surprise was that all of the tracks on the 2005 SPV Map still seem to be there in a contemporary satellite image. My second surprise was that the tower is still standing.

This was taken on Hallets last day open as a station/tower..and the AA dispatchers office.
I got the privilege to be an operator at Hallett early on in my meandering 33 yr rayroad career.
Probably the best job I ever had next to being a dispatcher for the GT (2000-2003).

Howie Castellucio posted four pictures of Hallett Tower with the comment:
Hallett tower. On Toledos north side. The last remaining manned tower in Ohio.
I get to say.....Yeah I worked there!!! For a moment in my now going on 28 yr railroad career.
I wished I had taken pictures of the model board before someone came in and re did it.
Before it was redone it still had the DT&I circle emblem on the model board from when the DT&I had control of the AA.

Eric Berg: I remember that writing in red ink meant that the train was running against the current of traffic...is that what it means here?

Gregg Gary: Always wondered what the colors on the model board meant.
Scott Perry: Gregg Gary, I was told it was for how the tracks are blocked for circuits.
