Indianapolis, IN: INRD/IC Senate Avenue Railyard

(Satellite)

IC had a branch that went to Indianapolis. This yard is where the freight trains would have terminated. This topo map shows that IC had a track that went further North so that passenger trains could terminate at Union Station. It shows that the passenger route did street running for part of that connection. Of course, the passenger route is now abandoned.

Dennis DeBruler
I read an article a few years ago that INRD has an agreement with CN to run through intermodal traffic between CN Pacific ports in Canada and Indianapolis. The handoff happens in Newton, IL. Since CN can bypass Chicago using its EJ&E route, I would think this would be an attractive alternative for Asia-to-Midwest container traffic. Especially since the queue off Southern California continues to grow.

Unlike many big city railyards, only a fraction of this yard has been converted to intermodal traffic. I'm saving a current satellite image so that later I can determine the location of the additional 12 acres that the article says INRD bought.
