Shenandoah, PA: Anthracite Culm Power Plants

Schuylkill Energy: (Satellite) The power plant in the Facebook posting.
Gilberton Power: (Satellite) A power plant I found while looking for the above.

One of the leftovers of the mining of coal are the culm banks that surround the old breakers. Think of it like this. Anthracite coal has a heat value of between 12,000 and 14,000 British Thermal Units (BTU)/pound. Anthracite culm, or waste coal, has a heat value of anywhere between 3000 and 5000 BTUs/pound. Sort of like burning 30 octane gas in the car. In the late 1970s a new boiler technology was used to burn this waste coal to make energy and get rid of the culm banks. The culm banks cause acid runoff into the local streams and the ash that the boilers produce is basic in the nature. Counteracting the acid runoff. Long story short, these new boilers started popping up all over the coal region. This is Schuylkill Energy Resources, or the St. Nicholas Cogen Project. About 80mw of electrical energy. “Chendo” aka Shenandoah, Pennsylvania. August 13, 2022

Between these two power plants are a lot of "land scars" of coal mining activity.

Just yesterday, I learned about the Jeddo Anthracite Mine and its three draglines
