Canaanville, OH: Coal Mine Ruins, Lost/B&O Depot and Cannabis Museum

Mine: (Satellite)
Depot: (Satellite see aerial photo below. Adding more lanes to US-50 wiped out all of the railroad property.)
Museum: (Satellite)

This would be the bottom of the smokestack and some coal tipple remnants of the Canaanville Coal Mine Co.

Coal mine ruins. I was fortunate to have gathered a large number of artifacts at the Cannabis Museum, which also includes a number of Canaanville Coal Co. artifacts that are on display. Coal cash, and some cool stuff.
The hours have recently changed, but I know you can call the # on the website for info. Definitely worth a visit.

[This must be the B&O depot.]

The coal mine ruins are now owned by the Canaanville Arts Center. Comparing this photo with the photo of the mine above, they did a nice job of remodeling the coal mine building.

Looking at the depot photos, the mountain is on the right and the river is on the left. So, we are looking Northwest. I had a hard time locating the depot on a 1960 aerial photo. One of my issues is that there is no road in the depot photos. So I went back in time to the oldest topo map I could find. There is a stretch between today's Athens County Engineer's Office and the Cannabis Museum that was on the river side of the railroad. The roads, mountain and river have moved since then and now, so it is complicated. Are the top and bottom photos the square along the tracks just west of the "C"?

By the 1960s, the side of the mountain had been cut back so that US-50 could be built straight through.

And this is a 50-50 mix of the two topo maps to help correlate them.

Note how the cut through of the meander down by the Cannabis Museum is now complete, but the Google Maps labels for the river have not been updated.

Fortunately, the aerial photo for the coal mine does make sense.
