IC: (Satellite)
CB&Q: (Satellite, there used to be several tracks on this side of the river. There is now a big levee.)
IC came through Galena on the east side of the Galena River while CB&Q and C&NW terminated on the west side of the river. C&NW came down from Wisconsin and CB&Q came up from their mainline along the Mississippi River. Galena Junction is where the CB&Q branch to Galena left their mainline. Per the Sanborn Map below, CB&Q crossed the Galena River just downstream from the Green Street bridge and went to their mainline on the east side of the river. And according to the topo map below, IC crossed the river a little further downstream and went towards the Mississippi River on the west side of the river.

CN still operates the IC route through town, but the depot is now a museum. Please read Off the Beaten Path In Illinois for a history and photos of this depot. (source)

| Larry Foht posted A different view of the Galena Depot Galena Illinois Iowa Division Larry Foht collection: Jim Hamick: Town was settled in 1826. Andy Hughes: An unusual depot but with a bay window.Agents Job was still there. Would like to know some landmark dates for this unique town. The date(s) the river silted in, date they converted the IC drawbridge to fixed, lastly the dates the C&NW and CB&Q pulled out of town. Also the worst of the hard times (when). The stagnancy helped to buy time and stall ‘progress’ thereby saving all these vintage buildings. Jim Kelling shared with the comment: "Galena Illinois." |

The station, built in 1857, has been completely refurbished and today is the Galena Country Visitors Center. David Jkief: So this would have been the station Grant would have caught the train to Washington after winning the presidency? Chris Goepel: David Jkief yes. |

| Lisa Ruble posted lllinois Central Railroad Depot Galena Illinois Built 1857 On October 18, 1854, The Apple River to Galena Branch of the Illinois Central Railroad was opened, the “Iron Horse had arrived in Galena.” The Illinois Central Depot at Galena, IL. was built in 1857 and upon it’s opening it was proclaimed to be the best Passenger Depot in the state, with the exception, perhaps, of some in Chicago. The Depot fronts on the railroad track 48 feet and on Bouthillier Street 36 Feet. It is a two story brick building, and was erected at a cost of $8,000. The lower story contains all the apartments necessary for a complete Depot among which we mention a Gentlemen’s Reception Room, 20 by 22 Feet, A Ladies’ Reception Room, 18 by 22 feet, Ladies’ Dressing Room, 8 by 15 feet, Ticket Office, 12 by 15 feet, and a Baggage Room 12 by 15 feet. The upper story contains six rooms and was occupied by Mr. Spaulding (Freight Agent) and Family as a Dwelling. A platform extends around three sides of the Depot and will be extended to Second Street. Two small cupolas surmount the roof, and skylights are also inserted, and the building, as a whole, presents a handsome appearance. Jo Daviess County I took this photo in August 2018. See a photo of the depot taken in 1952 in the comments. |

| Brian Berthold posted old time Galena before the Flood Stuff was added Ted Richardson: CB&Q branch that followed the Galena River up from the Q's twin cities main. Originating from the Q's Galena Junction The small square image was their passenger station. the larger rectangle shape was the Q freight House. The Army Corp of Engineers eliminated this with the flood control program. All was moved to the IC passenger station side of the river then the Q pulled out in 1960. The green line represents the CNW line coming down from Wisconsin that was pulled out in 1939. Though their passenger station remained into the 1980's kiddy corner from the IC passenger station ending up being part of a materials facility owned by a company out of Dubuque, IA. Flyn (sp) something. Thanks for sharing this photo. |
