You can tell that this was a more recent strip mining operation because the swaths of been leveled. But I can't tell if they restored the top soil.

I presume the L shaped building on this 1979 Vermont Quadrangle @ 1:24,000 was the tipple facility.

Judging by the bridge in the photo, the new depot was built down by the "mainline."

  1. I worked for AMAX Coal Company from 1976 until 1985 and traveled to Sunspot Mine once. While there, the Marion 8750 was moving to a new coal field and the reclamation crews were busy putting the soil back to agricultural use. AMAX Coal was one of the most responsible companies in the coal industry and reclaimed mined land better than just about any other entity.

    1. Unfortunately, these photos are low resolution. But for any photo, if you click it, you should get a larger version displayed on your screen. Then if you right-click that image, you should get a menu with a "Save image as..." choice. If you select that action, it will pop up a form that allows you to save the image on your disk drive.

  3. I worked for AMAX from 1977 until the we were laid off. I was the grounds man and walked the shovel out of the pit for the last time. to this day, it was the best place I ever worked. I loved the guys and at 64 years of age ,i would go back there and coal mine again. So sad its a lost profession.

  5. Are you aware of the the fossils that were found at the Sun Spot mine? The fossils were similar to Mazon Creek fossils found near Wilmington, Braidwood, Coal City, and Morris, IL. From what I understand, shrimp were common. The site is also 1 of the 3 localities where Tully Monsters were found.

I am the historian for the Earth Science Club of Northern Illinois. Have a look at our weekly Mazon Monday posts. https://www.esconi.org/esconi_earth_science_club/mazon-monday/

Would you mind if we used some of your photos in a future post? Thanks!
