CSS&SB Pullman built in 1926 #108 Chicago bound boarding at Michigan City Depot on Dec. 26, 1963.
Rick Smith: While it was closed in 1987 and a bus-stop-like shelter placed next to the original station, sadly, it came down this past January (2022), in prep for the new station and street-running re-alignment. They did save the glazed terra-cotta tiles from the faรงade ─ or at least many (if not most) of them ─ for inclusion into the new station.

Richard Koenig: Heck of a shot, my favorite spot in MC. This area will be changed completely with the rebuild. No more roller coaster.

Larry Candilas: The best place; or should I say IT WAS the best place I thought to watch and photograph the street-running. Just out of the picture to the left is a big church that had a low stone wall along the sidewalk, perfect for sitting on and seeing any eastbounds coming toward you. I have some old slides of the 800s coming down the mini-hill I called it, just have to figure out about a scanner. Great picture!!

The main CSS route through town is on 10th Street west of the 10th Street Tower and then on 11th Street east of that tower.

Mark Bilecki Sr. Cool the ex Iowa Interstate unit , saw it at Clark rd
Martin Faland Although I do suggest to get your pictures of this sooner rather than later as I believe South Shore is building a new station in Michigan city and that will replace the South shore's street running section.

Then comes the story of a wonderful, attractive female new hire brakeman. We had ahold of 4 cars of ballast with the work train shoving from the Shops to around Route 12. We had to shove through the street. The conductor instructs her to ride the hind end on the hopper, and watch out going down the street. Getting close to the depot and the middle of town she started to wave at everyone. She had long blond hair and all these guys were waving at her and she was acknowledging them. Frustrated the conductor got on the radio and shouted, "Hey!!! This ain't no homecoming parade."

A bonus photo. We can start an office pool on how long this fossil burning power plant will survive. CSS freight shares the Amtrk+NS/MC tracks across the river and then uses the former NKP/LE&W tracks to get back down to it shops and beyond. CSS got this route when the Monon abandoned its access to Michigan City.

How would you like this coming down your street?
We have been discussing this train for a few days.
Metra Locomotive and Cars, NICTD Train #117 in Michigan City, IN on the evening of July 10, 1987.  When NICTD was short of cars, a Metra train was borrowed.  On weekdays it came in from Michigan City in the morning and went back in the evening.
1. Unloading at the Michigan City Depot.
2 and 3. Moving to the Michigan City Yard for the night.
Craig Myers: Unnervingly close to the catenary.
Harold J. Krewer: Metra bilevels are a shade over 16 feet tall to the top of the horns. The overhead wire is over 20 feet up, there is no clearance problem. Y'all do realize NICTD has been running bilevel EMUs that are the same height in daily service for over a decade now?

Looking  a bit forlorn,  the one-time Michigan City, IN MC station (which has gone   thru several unsuccessful efforts at being a  restaurant) is still with  us. This photo, looking E-N/E was taken by me on Tuesday, June 11th [2024].
Nathan Nietering: I had heard that the Swingbelly restaurant lease was allowed to expire for the planned demolition for condos. Silver lining if the pandemic seems to have killed the condo tower project. There is potential there, with the right vision and some money. Glad to know it’s still standing to see another day and another train pass by!
