Vallejo, CA: Mare Island Drydock and Liberty Ship SS Jeremiah O'Brien

(Satellite)

This facility was a naval shipyard. The northern part is now a maritime museum.

The SS Jeremiah O'Brien is being drydocked starting Aug 15, 2023. This ship is a Liberty ship that was launched on Jun 19, 1943 in S. Portland Maine. It is normally moored at Pier 35 in San Francisco: "Functioning World War II–era naval ship serving as a living museum for the Liberty class of ships."

There is an extensive set of photos in their Facebook group of the drydocking. Unfortunately, I don't know how to reference the collection so that you can access them a year from now.

SS Jeremiah O'Brien, National Liberty Ship Memorial posted
Last image of today, wanted to get a picture of the ship with the dry dock pumped out, but I needed to catch the ferry back to San Francisco.

Given the backgrounds in the above two photos, the ship is in this drydock.

"The SS Jeremiah O'Brien is one of two remaining fully functional Liberty ships of the 2,710 built and launched during World War II. The O'Brien has the distinction of being the last unaltered Liberty ship and remains historically accurate." [ssjeremiahobrien]

Unlike most museum ships, this one still operates. You can ride on it for $165.

  1. Mare Island constructed and repaired ships and submarines from 1854-1996. It was a victim of the 1993 Base Realignment and Closure process. The submarine I served on was built there in 1963. I served on the decommissioning crew in 1994. The shipyard served the Navy and country well.
