Lance Wales posted The Floods of 1993 certainly produced some operating headaches for the railroads in the upper Midwest, but they also provided some unique opportunities. Amtrak's usual route of the California Zephyr via the BN was under water in southern Iowa so they called up the C&NW to take the trains. The C&NW was running heavy with detours off the Santa Fe and others already and couldn't provide extra freight locomotives to handle the trains, so Amtrak got some of Metra's ex-C&NW E8s to ride the point for the cab signal requirement. On July 17, 1993 Amtrak #5 was whipping right along at Creston, IL behind the 516 and Amtrak 409 and 356 at 4:30 p.m. That set out double stack on the right was off a Santa Fe train from a day earlier. Joel Kirchner: Very busy time that summer. I doubled a few times and even tripled one day! We also had SOO/IMRL, Espee, Santa Fe and UP detours. I don't recall if we hosted BN trains. I had just gone through Commuter engineer training a few months earlier. At the shop they were showing us around an F40PH in the shop. There was an E9 on the adjacent track. Hoping to get in the cab, I asked, "Is that one different?" The mechanical guy said, "Yeah, but you won't be seeing those on the mainline anymore." A couple of months later, they were leading Amtrak detours. I got called for one, but unfortunately it had an SD40-2 as the ATC leader. It was special in it's own right as it had just received new old yellow and one of first few to receive Operation Lifesaver graphics. Lance Wales: Joel Kirchner there was a BN coal load (Oak Creek?) that came into Rochelle one night from Savanna. It had 3 C30-7s for power. The CNW sent a 4300-series Geep out to provide cab signals, but the crew said it wouldn’t MU properly so they got blocks in advance of movement with the BN C30-7 leading toward Proviso. |
