David Schauer posted two photos with the comment: "A pair of aerial views of work being done on the "new" C. Reiss dock in Superior prior to them relocating from West Duluth in 2024. They will share the slip with Envirotech-Hallett Dock 8 (left). The grading appears to be for a rail spur. Superior, WI - October 2, 2023"
Nancy VanderMolen Krempa: Great views, but that slip looks just a tad too narrow to get two ships in at once? Just a guess from this perspective!
David Schauer: Nancy VanderMolen Krempa Will likely need to coordinate visits like they do at other docks.
Dan Qualy: What ever happened to C. Reiss? The name goes back a long time and at many ports. I've looked into this before and there really isn't much info about C. Reiss.
Also, why is the Hallett Dock in Duluth closing?
Andrew Chammings: Dan Qualy Hallett 5 in duluth was purchased by the CN, Superiors Hallett 8 was purchased by EnviroTech.

David Schauer posted three photos with the comment: "Here are three images from Basgen Photography that show the area in Superior where C. Reiss is relocating to next year. I'm guessing most of these coal docks were owned by Reiss historically. One image is from 1959 and shows them active as well as the Stott Briquet Company plant on-site. There was also a slip for tankers to deliver fuel. By 1973 the two other images show the current Envirotech and future Reiss docks unused. Basgen Photography"
Denny Paderewski: Has business increased enough in the shipping industry …that these type of investments are being made?
David Schauer: Denny Paderewski Just a shift from one dock to another, mainly for deeper vessel draft.
Daniel Holbrook: First photo from 1959. Starting with Stott Briquett in the middle of photo. That dock (Envirotech) in 1959 was C.Reiss Coal, Superior Coal Dock, next east of C. Reiss was the Berwind Fuel Co. Dock No.1, next dock with all the tank cars is the Standard Oil Dock, also the location of Union Tank Cars, Superior, WI shop facility for cleaning and repair of tank cars, next dock is Great Lakes Coal & Dock Co., then the large oil storage tank is Shell Oil Co and Murphy Corp oil dock. Vacant property with no freight cars on it is LST&T Number 27 Yard and adjacent to it with empty grain boxcars is the NP Skally Yard. To the right of the photo are docks for United States Gypsum Co, Great Northern Merchandise Dock, Pure Oil and Texaco Docks, and in foreground the leads into Great Northern Elevators S&X. Then the GN and NP mains heading for Minn/Wisc draws and the "Omaha Superior Yard" with the Baldwin switcher. Thanks Dave for posting this photo. Lots of history.

David Schauer posted An aerial update on the rebirth of this C. Reiss dock in Superior to replace their facility in West Duluth. Ships will unload in a shared slip with Envirotech-Hallett Dock 8. Note the new coated pilings being placed along the dock wall. Completion is expected in summer 2024. Superior, WI - November 12, 2023 Nicholas Stamper: any rumblings as to what will become of their old location? David Schauer: Nicholas Stamper Retained by Reiss, but possibly leased to other interested parties. Decent industrial site with rail access, just shallower draft and crumbling dock face for the water side of the business. Tim Miller: Is this where the Walter J. McCARTHY JR got a log or light pole pushed into the motor room? David Schauer: Tim Miller Yes, and I think it was a concrete block that was part of the Incan Superior's unloading apron, but don't quote me on that. [Another comment indicates that it was going into the slip for winter layup.] |
The primary rainbow in the middle is so brilliant that I almost missed the secondary rainbow on the right side.
David Schauer posted Here is a closer view of the rainbows over C. Reiss in West Duluth yesterday evening after thunderstorms rolled through. Arthur M. Anderson unloading limestone before departing empty for Two Harbors. June 12, 2024 |
