The Pennsy route to St. Louis originally was just south of Troy. And the St. Louis, Troy & Eastern never went east of Troy.

By 1937, Pennsy had built their more direct route to St. Louis further south of Troy and the original route east of Troy was abandoned. The western part of the original route was effectively an industrial spur. The St. Louis, Troy & Eastern was absorbed by the Illinois Traction. Also, today's US-40 had yet to be built.
