This photograph from 1915 shows the Toledo, Peoria & Western's small roundhouse and turntable at Effner, located on the Illinois/Indiana state line. Prior to 1976, this was the eastern end of the TP&W (beyond Effner, the trackage was owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad). As such, the need for a locomotive terminal and turning facility was needed, so TP&W equipment and crews could return west. This facility was removed by the 1940s.

Dennis DeBruler The wood grain elevator is still standing. So is the depot. But unless the roof is fixed, I don't think it will be standing for long.

Tom Horvath Is Handy Tower the small building just west of Sheldon at the RR diamond ? Where is Webster Cabin located? I used to have these marked on some old maps.
Thomas Dyrek Tom Horvath Webster is the building located near Sheldon. Handy Tower (or what’s left of it) is located near Ambia, IN on the Kankakee, Beaverville & Southern.
Ed Mrowiec Webster is west of Sheldon.
Ken Morrison where the old Milwaukee Road crosses US 24.

The Toledo, Peoria & Western depot at Effner, Indiana, likely seen around 1976-77, after Conrail discarded the Logansport-Effner branch. Note the red cast iron sign on the side of the building, indicating its Pennsylvania Railroad heritage. The town sits right on the Illinois-Indiana state line. Mark E. Vaughan: Last time I went by the wye was still in place but pretty well obscured by weeds. I assume PRR and TPW locomotives had to be turned and kept on line until run through agreements were established.

Noah Haggerty: This would actually be at Effner, located right on the IL/IN border along the TP&W. A storm caused damage to it a couple years ago and it was torn down.

Dennis DeBruler That reminds me that PRR used to own the route to the state border and TP&W owned it from there all the way to Keokuk, IA.

Michael Matalis: I lost a memory today [Dec 12, 2021]. The TP&W was a favorite railroad of mine, and I visited the depot at Effner a number of times. It has been abandoned for a number of years and grown increasingly decrepit, and last night's heavy weather was the last straw, the roof and one wall caved in, and what is left will be torn down in the next few days. Farewell old friend!

I take US-52 for places south and east of Lafayette instead of I-64 because Indiana can't get funding for a third lane on that highway. So I can't believe the number of times I have driven past this elevator and depot without seeing it. I guess I do a good job of keeping my eyes on the road. By the time I noticed the elevator, the depot was gone.
