Linwood, NC: NS/Sou Spencer Yard is being closed

(Satellite) This yard has both a hump and a locomotive servicing facility.

This yard was built in the 1970s to relieve the original yard that is now a transportation museum.

This view from Southern Railway Spencer Tower shows the Local Yard job waits in track 1, while a southbound comes down the lead to yard his train. Spencer Yard, Spencer, NC.
[According to the caption, this was the yard in Spencer, NC. But Wikipedia confirms that the yard in Linwood is also called Spencer Yard after Samuel Spencer, the first president of Southern Railway. Wikipedia also explains that the facility is Spencer, NC was called the Spencer Shops. So the caption implying Spencer Yard was in Spencer, NC, appears to be wrong. Since a locomotive repair facility would not have a yard tower, this photo was probably taken in Linwood, NC.]

Southern built this yard in 1979 at a cost of $49m. [Wikipedia] As railroad yards go, that is rather modern.

I read about this yard closing when I read an article about the Roanoke's locomotive service facility closing. Unfortunately, yards being closed is no longer news. But the comments on Bo's post were interesting enough that I wanted to save the link.

Bo Blair shared the following YouTube link. The comments on this post are interesting because it explains how railroad managers are using car dwell time, as well as operating ratio, to razzle-dazzle the hedge fund managers. Cars spend less time in the yard because they are put on an inappropriate train to get them out of the yard. The cars actually spend more, and variable, time on the railroad. This would also explain why they need longer trains, they have cars that they should not have. And, at least on the UP, these long trains act like locals because they add/drop at each yard they pass. Which further delays the cars deliveries to customers. To serve the customers instead of the stockholders, I think the railroads should go to one-man crews and add a bunch of point-to-point trains to the network. Railroad executives continue to demonstrate that the STB (Surface Transportation Board) is needed, and the STB needs to do a better job of protecting America's railroad service from robber barons.
Jim Sank Geeze. NS is taking a beating as well. Bellevue, OH, hump got shut down as well. Sad
Randy Tiell Hump is back open after 6 hours of trying the flat switching idea. That's what I was told by an NS employee yesterday. Drove by there Friday and they were humping.
Matthew Karn Randy Tiell I can confirm that info.
Jim Sank Randy Tiell i was told that the hump. Had shut down. Reopened to get caught up then shut down again. That was the last I had heard.
Patrick Ertle Randy Tiell I work there. June 7th all hump operations will stop. We have to start flat switching again.
