Lance Wales posted Help with some identification please? Picked up this print at a flea market years ago for $3. Only markings on the back is "Dave Lewis, of Peoria, IL". Obviously it is the C&IM 500 on their passenger train, but where are we? I would guess Havanna, IL or somewhere near, as there are no facilities other than the coal chute and water tank. |

Thanks to some comments on some notes, it was next to a siding north of Old Salem Chautauqua. The towers do not appear on a 1939 aerial photo. |
Rick F
posted seven photos and a lot of information about these towers.

39°59'40.0"N 89°49'54.8"W 39.994432, -89.831896 Looking at a 1970 aerial, the water tower was north of the siding and the coaling tower was south of the siding. Rick F: Dennis DeBruler I think the information in there isn't correct. I believe the siding was used to store the coal cars used to fill the tower and the towers were on the mainline. They would most likely always been cars on the siding interfering with use of the siding for engines. Also looking at the other coaling tower in Quiver, it is actually located on the main line also with water plugs on each side of it. I do believe that is where the siding was located as it is the only spot wide enough to support it there. I would also like to mention that this was located on a downgrade towards the river also. North bound engines would have the benefit of the grade to help them start back up but South bound engine over 45 cars would drop their cars at Hurst siding and then proceed up the towers and then back down to reconnect to their trains and proceed on south. Dennis DeBruler: Rick F Thanks for the information. I have updated by notes accordingly. |
