I believe this was the original route to Chicago built by the LS&MS (Lake Shore & Michigan Southern). I knew this route was abandoned in favor of the new route from Toledo to Chicago when railroads beat out water transport (canals and boats). But I'm surprised that the abandonment started before 1956.
