Alleghany, VA: C&O A Cabin (Tower)

(Satellite)

Ted Gregory posted six photos with the comment:
Long live the C&O!!
Gone but not forgotten
C&O A Cabin - now demolished
It was located at the east
portals of the State Line Tunnels
Also note #602 AC6000CW. Not sure if it was derated yet.
Any locomotive enthusiasts know?
My pics from Oct 31, 2015
Major Dunbar: CSX demolished it back in 2018 I think.
RC Remington: As of 15 they were not derated.
They would pull a mountain..but they sold em all a.few.years ago.
Virgil Fitzpatrick: The derates started around 08 with a few exceptions. This was one of those few that didn't get a derate and was subsequently stored around 16 to await it's repowering. CSX replaced the prime movers with GEVO motors so at the time of their sale, they were essentially an ES44AH in an AC60 shell. The ones scrapped suffered from frame twist due to the inertia and G Forces they would exert from not being on a thicker frame. I'm actually quite shocked more of them didn't find new homes aside from a handful. But considering the trackage needed to field these....I shouldn't be.
The writing was on the wall for them when CSX 495 & 496 debuted for testing on the B&O Mountain Sub. Because now you had an AC44 proven platform that could do the same job on less fuel

Ted provided the coordinates of the tower in another group. Since the mountains in the East are green instead of brown like they are in the West, it is easy to see where the tracks disappear into the tunnel.
