Pekin, IL: SantaFe Depot and the Ancona-Pekin Branch

(Satellite, the land has been repurposed)

There was a small yard between the depot and today's Pekin Park District Trail (Peoria Trail Extension).

Per this site, the ATSF depot no longer exists. There are 3 in Pekin, though. The one on streetview on this post looks to be the C&IM. http://www.rrshs.org/Illinois/tazewell.htm

Been there lots of times when I worked the Pekin Branch . We would drop off cars at the East Yard and bring cars down town to the yard and delver any interchange cars and leave caboose down town then take engine back to east yard for Carman to turn and service Engine . Nice depot sad to see it torn down . My Father always said the Branch made money even during the Depression. The RR wanted to get rid of Branch lines and did it .

So it was the rectangle in the red box on this 1939 aerial photo.
Scott Dolanc: Yes. North side of the tracks. Its a poker joint now with gambling machines. If you kick around the lot you can still find some platform bricks and the occasional tie here and there.... But for the most part no trace of any of this area remains today.

SantaFe bought a railroad that ran from Chicago to Pekin to gain access to Chicago. This train was on the segment between Pekin and Ancona that they later abandoned.
John Albee: It is still used by the Tip Up just past Jefferson street in Morton to service Fort Transfer.
David Flint: The line in Morton is abandoned now, the crossing are paved over

Concerning the delayed abandonment to Morton, according to my 2005 SPV Map, TP&W used trackage rights on the NS/NKP/LE&W route to Crandall, IL, where it then used the SantaFe remnant to get to Morton.

If you can figure out where this was and/or how Rock Island trains got to it, please leave a comment. I could not find the location of the Conklin Lumber company.
