Tom Lampman posted two photos with the comment: "The Milwaukee Road at Kittredge, Illinois. MP117. The train is on the D&I westbound and the track running straight is the RS&W to Milwaukee. The RS&W was abandoned in 1980. If that year is not correct and anybody knows, please correct me. 1942. Photographer unknown."
Patrick Flynn: Knew a gal dispatcher at ATSF that was born and raised in Kittredge in the later 50's thru early 70's, she was totally freaked to found out I knew about the towns' MILW history!
[Looking at an old aerial photo and some topo maps, I could not find a town in which the ATSF dispatcher could have lived.]

...Racine, not Milwaukee.

The tree lines show that the icon marks the location of the former junction.

When the branch was abandoned, they made the curve in the mainline more gradual. This mainline is now owned by Canadian Pacific (CP Rail Systems).

The bridge in the foreground of the first photo must have been over a creek.
1942 Mt Carroll Quad @ 62,500 |
This confirms that there used to be a bridge over a creek.
