"The East River Generating Station is a 43,000-square-foot, 660-megawatt oil and natural gas-fired power plant located along the East River at 14th Street in Lower Manhattan. East River Station was built as a coal facility in 1926 by the New York Edison Company. The plant’s original six-story boilers were so large that one of them accommodated a 100-person luncheon held in honor of the plant’s opening in 1926." In addition to generating electricity, this plant is the most prolific supplier of steam for ConEd's commercial steam system, the largest and most extensive in the USA. [

power-eng "Con Edison’s East River Repowering Project (ERRP) [in 2001] increased the electric generating capacity of the East River complex from 300 MW to 660 MW and expanded its steam generating capacity from 2.7 to 5.7 million pounds/hour. This was accomplished by installing two dual-fuel combustion turbines, two heat recovery steam generators, a 6,730 gallon per minute (gpm) demineralization facility and 80,000 feet of process piping – all without increasing the station’s footprint in downtown Manhattan." [Because the condesate of the steam sold by the steam distribution system is not returned to the plant, a significant makeup water supply is needed. This article has significan details about the water treatment facility.] |
