HistoricPittsburgh The interior of the Allegheny Light Company power station. Description reads: "AC POWER PLANTS GREW RAPIDLY - The early current power plants grew rapidly and used numerous small alternators belt driven. This is a Westinghouse plant of about 1888. Original AC generator - (1886-1889). This type has a smooth armature core, covered with a single layer of wire. It produced 133 cycles, 1000 volts, single phase. The bearings required frequent attention, being lubricated by drip from the large oil reservoirs. Developed by Westinghouse." Bob Ciminel posted Joe LaDuca: Who needs belt cages? lol Bob Ciminel: The oiler's job was high-risk in that environment. Chris Austin: Driven by Westinghouse 2 cylinder single acting high speed steam engines. And I should have said compound engines also. Single acting eliminates a crosshead and it's height and reciprocating weigh, and also 180 cranks. The condensate and oil was used for lubrication. |
These are notes I am writing to help me learn our industrial history. They are my best understanding, but that does not mean they are a correct understanding.
