Ashland, KY: C&O Clyffeside Tower and Armco Coke Plant

(Satellite, it was between the mainline and the industrial spur)

Google Maps labels that industrial spur as "Clyffeside Branch."

The plant in the background was Armco's coke plant. They had a steel plant on the other side of Ashland.

Harold Fannin: This is actually the coke plant that served the steel plant just a few miles west of the location of this photo, this control point is called Clyffeside, it used to be a fantastic train watching spot, years ago,to the right of the photographer, used to be quite a few homes between the plant yard and the C&O mainline, but by the mid 80's,most of those homes were in very bad condition, its rare to see pictures of the plant being switched at this entrance as there was one east of this one,and at the west end of Ashland yard.
George Greene: The West end of the triple track between BS Jct and Cliffside. Also the place where the Ashland passenger main left the freight mains.
Harold Fannin: Yes, when they shut down the passenger main, control of Clyffeside was transferred to BS cabin and this tower closed in 1971.
George Greene: Harold Fannin when I got to Huntington in 1981, the BS Jct board went all the way to NC. Clyffeside to NC was a stretch of automatic block.
Harold Fannin: Yes it was, I forgot about NC closing the same time as Clyffeside, I remember that double track was automatic block now,and if I remember correctly, it was directional wasn't it?,it had signals for #1 westbound only, and #2 eastbound only according to pictures I have.
Ray Morriss: Semet-Solvey Coke on the east end of Ashland.
Ray Morriss: Part of my territory when I was the Terminal superintendent at Russell. I grew up in Ashland.
