Something different for this week's banner change is this view of what is thought to be the Maas underground iron ore mine near Negaunee, Michigan, circa 1950s. Thanks to Paul Peterson for sharing this and other fine LS&I-related images.
[LS&I = Lake Superior & Ishpeming, and it still exists today.]
Ronald Kaminen: The Tracy Mine had red ore that ran like pea soup by the time it got to Marquette, so they would dump raw hard ore or dry ore on the bottom of the pocket, so the pea soup would run better into the boat.!! One year it froze into the dock and we had the steamers in the Spring thawing that ore for many weeks so it would break loose and run into the boat. 1960 to be exact.!! I fired the Soo Line 1017 on the dock May 10th ,, 1960.
The ore from these mines were mixed on the ore dock according to the iron quality of the ore. In Negaunee there were at least four or five mines shipping at the same time.!!!!

I included so much area in this topo excerpt because I kept finding mines and railroads in the area. The Maas Mine is near the upper-left corner.

Paul Osciak posted two photos with the comment: "Two preserved depots located across the street from each other in Negaunee, MI. The 1922 DSS&A depot is now an Air BnB. The 1884 Marquette and Western combo passenger / freight depot in now a business."
