Scranton, PA: DL&W Depot, Steamtown and Genesee Valley Transportation Co.

Depot: (Satellite)
Steamtown: (Satellite, 14,815 photos! I think that is the first time I have seen a 5-digit count)
Trolley Museum: (Satellite and Satellite)
Genesee Valley Transportation: (Satellite) GVT is a holding company and leases locomotives.
Pennsy Northeast Regional Railroad Authority: (Satellite) PNRRA is one of the companies that GVT owns.

PNRRA owns 88 route miles in northeastern Pennsylvania that were purchased by counties when they were abandoned. [trains_dl] The Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad (DL) operates the freight service on those tracks.

The trolley and steam locomotive museums share the former yard of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western (DL&W). I use the label rrErie because it later merged with the Erie and it is a more meaningful label than rrEast.

Steamtown is owned and run by the National Park Service. It houses a famous collection of steam locomotives.

The roundhouse is almost a full circle and it is part of Steamtown. Steamtown is one of the museums in our country that features a Big Boy. This is the first time that I have seen a turntable with handrails around the pit. They must allow the public in here.

If this was torn down in 1947, where was it?

They regularly offer short excursion train rides in the yard and several times a season offer a train ride to another city on Saturdays. [NPS_TrainRides]

The trolley museum also offers excursions. [ectma]

[A steel tire is a circle of steel. It is heated by the fire so that it can be pressed onto the wheel. When it cools, it shrinks on the wheel and friction keeps it attached. To replace the tire, they reheat it to get it off.]

"The Genesee Valley Transportation Company was founded in 1985 with the purchase of secondhand diesel locomotives for leasing out to other short line and regional railroads, in addition to providing consulting and logistic services....Genesee Valley Transportation holds a growing fleet of diesels from Alco and Montreal Locomotive Works, marking the largest fleet in North America. Most are painted in the company’s “Corporate White” color scheme. A new locomotive shop was constructed in the Green Ridge section of Scranton to repair and maintain the company’s diverse roster." [trains_gvt] (The shops are so new that they do not show up in a May 2023 satellite image. This shop repurposes the engine-service land (i.e. roundhouse, etc.) that was in a Delaware & Hudson railyard.)

The DL&W yard is near the bottom and the much smaller D&H yard is up by Green Ridge Street.

This photo caught my eye because of the Polk Interlocking Tower that is peaking out over  the top of the ALCOs. But then it occurred to me why would Genesee Valley Transportation be posting a photo located in Chicago. Chicago deals with Class I railroads, not shortlines.

Nickel Plate Road ALCO PA locomotives 180 & sister bring a 'head-end' heavy train out of Chicago's LaSalle Street Station circa 1960.

When I went to the GVT page, I got my answer. I recently saw a lot of railfan photos of Nickel Plate Road 190, especially this one. I knew this locomotive was being shipped from somewhere out west to somewhere out east. I now know its destination: GVT in Scranton, PA.

John Coiron: And the 1st thing I noticed was the SD40-2 and its slug…
Shawn Noe: Very interesting. I wonder if they may take it to Landers Yard and put it on the 264 Intermodal train that runs from Landers to the old D&H line. A cut of that train runs direct to Scranton on K82. It would be the quickest way. Maybe if we are lucky NS will get the NKP Heritage Unit over to Landers.
Jason Tooker: Does this thing run yet? Or just a shell still?
Jerry M Murphy: Jason Tooker, Has everything inside, but, some wiring needs buttoned up. The engine runs.
The engine, traction alternator, electrical cabinet, traction motors all came from a wrecked BC Rail M420B.

Genesee Valley Transportation Co., Inc.'s recently-acquired Alco PA is heading east today [Apr 23, 2023] through the Columbia River Gorge. The locomotive will stop in Pasco, Washington, before being put on another eastbound. The eventual destination? Scranton, Pa.

After setting in Chicago (Clearing Yard) for about five days, it made it to La Porte, IN. That means many railfans are disappointed because they wanted NS to use the NKP tracks instead of the NYC tracks. And we can see on the left side of the photo that the delay in Clearing Yard was not because NS planted to put the NKP heritage unit in front.

Genesee Valley Transportation Company, Inc. NKP/DL 190 as seen occupying the La Porte siding on the Norfolk Southern Chicago Line at La Porte, Indiana on 5/12/2023. Yes, this is on the extreme eastern fringe of the Chicagoland Railfan area. But, this movement became a night move through Lake, Porter, and La, Porte counties due to numerous delays on Thursday 5/11/2023.

I wonder where it crossed from NYC tracks (LaPorte, IN) to NKP tracks on this trip.

David Wilkinson: Pulled by 4 Alco/MLWs! Excellent!
"The Alco was built for Santa Fe in 1948 and was one of four sold to Delaware & Hudson in 1967. All four eventually went to Mexico in 1978; two were repatriated from there as little more wreck-damaged shells in 2000. This unit was restored by preservationist Doyle McCormack and displayed in Portland until it was acquired by GVT earlier this year. The other PA is at the Museum of the American Railroad in Texas."
