Coal City, IL: Pequot Junction: Santa Fe vs. GM&O

Jerry Jackson posted two photos with the comment: "This is the Santa Fe signal bridge guarding the east end of Coal City in 1991."
Josh Biggers: You have actually captured a lot of local history and childhood memories with the second picture. I had no idea the now non existent town of Eileen had their own water tower, which must have came down around the time I was born. I can remember the blue one to the left as well as the far one behind the Eileen town. All 3 of these are gone now.

GM&O trains used to turn north at Mazonia and join the Santa Fe here to use a shared right of way to Joliet. That connection has been severed and UP uses the Pequot Subdivision for car storage. But a satellite image indicates that they may be developing a rail served industrial park down there.
