Sarnia, ON: Loading a laker with grain and unloading yachts

Fred Miller II -> Fans of "Know Your Ships"

Fred's comment:
Sarnia, May, 1986, finds the LAKE MANITOBA, loading another grain cargo, for delivery to a lower lakes port, the tug MOUNT McKAY, resting at her dock, and the stern of the spoils carrier IV No 11 is visible, as she is tied up at the Government Dock.
A comment of interest:
Brandon Lee: I've seen the Lake Manitoba ( now the Algomarine ) many times up in the 1000 Islands. I love the look of these old lakers.

Andrew Meyer: I don't think 10 years ago I would have expected any of them to be gone at this point, especially the Enterprise.

Unloading Yachts

I first learned of some yachts headed to Sarnia from Florida when they were in the Eisenhower Lock.

I have passed up several photos of the ship's transit, but Michael is worthy of note.

Just a few pics of the M/V Marcellin Desgagne on her way to Sarnia this week with a load of yachts.
Welcoming the M/V Marcellin Desgagnes to our area on her way to Sarnia 06.03.2024.
With special guest appearance by Captain Alain Gindroz with his first ever load of yachts during his 48 years of sailing.
If you look closely, you will see Capt Gindroz not only waving to us as we pass by the bridge with our drone, but also waving to the workers on the Goride Howe International Bridge.
Captain Gindroz is one of our more popular pilots in area and can be seen commanding various vessels from all over the globe through District 2 of the Great Lakes. (Port Weller to Huron Cut : Sarnia / Port Huron).
Born in raised in Montreal, Capt. Gindroz now lives in the Niagara region with his wife and son.
This particular load of yachts (8 yachts on deck with 2 stored below) originated in Florida as the vessels are relocated to the Port Huron area for the summer months by Cross Chartering Yacht Transport. Annually, the Desgagnes group relocates yachts during the spring and late fall.
You can read more about the Canadian based Desgagnes group here;
Cross Chartering Yacht Transport is a global leader in International Yacht Transport.

We have also posted a video of her underway which can be viewed on the Windsor Aerial Drone Photography Facebook page.

This is the ship in Sarnia unloading the beautiful cargo ..

I've been looking forward to photos of the unloading operation. It has started (Jun 4, 2024).

Jeff Vandenberg posted four photos with the comment:
My morning was made.  With a cup of coffee I headed down to Sarnia Harbour.  M/V “MARCELLIN A. DESGAGNÉS was docked and the welders were on board.  A guy told me these yachts are actually welded to the freighter so they don't move.
The yachts were loaded in Port Everglades, (Fort Lauderdale) Florida and bound for Sarnia.  Once discharged the yachts will sail across to Port Huron and spend the summer on the lakes.  Later this fall they will all be reloaded onto a ship and return to Port Everglades. Beautiful June 4 2024.

Just to give everyone an idea of the stanchions that are welded to the deck. Then eyelets are welded to the deck and the yacht is strapped down.

Aerosnapper Kingston posted three photos with the comment: "These two vessels were seen alongside in Sarnia this morning.  The Jimaan, which used to serve as a ferry to Pelee Island has been there for some time.  I have no clue what the other vessel is.  No name or badging is visible. Perhaps someone can enlighten me, please."
[I can't find a comment that evidently said the boxier one was the ferry Jiimaan.]
Steve Norris: Majestic Star II is the other ship, it was an old casino ship once owned by Donald Trump. It was towed in from Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin and arrived in Sarnina June 2nd [2024].
Aerosnapper Kingston shared with the comment: "Can anyone tell me something about the vessel on the left, please.. ?"
Sean Larmay: Was Trump Casino. Opened in 96. Then sold to Majestic Star Holdings in 2005. Then closed by them in 2021.
Greg Grimes: The Majestic Star II once belonged to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s casino and hotel business, which operated it as a floating casino in Gary Indiana.
“We’ve known it was coming here for quite some time and anticipate it will be in Sarnia for about six months of repair,” said Jared Lean, the City of Sarnia’s harbour operator.
“The idea is to get it in a useable state,” he said.
The Majestic Star II was a floating casino from 1996 to 2021, according to Wikipedia. Initially, it was owned by Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts and was anchored next to a Trump hotel.
In 2005, she was sold to Majestic Star Holdings but closed for business in April 2021, then was towed to the Bay Shipbuilding Company in Sturgeon Bay in Wisconsin.
The Majestic Star II has a similar sized sister ship, Majestic Star I, that was also a former casino and is also due to arrive for repairs in Sarnia from Sturgeon Bay soon.
