Houston TX: Armco Steel Works

(Satellite, Armco is long gone, but the legacy of steel production is evident)

Texas had iron ore deposits that were used as early as 1855. "In 1941 and 1942, Sheffield Steel of Texas, a division of ARMCO (the American Rolling Mill Company), built a steel mill on the Houston Ship Channel that used scrap metal. Two years later Sheffield expanded these facilities into an integrated steel mill with open-hearth furnaces, coke ovens, a blooming mill, a plate mill, and a blast furnace. The plant subsequently used Texas and Mexican ores to make pig iron." [tshaonline-iron&steel] Actually, the Defense Plant Corp. built the plant, but Sheffield Steel operated it. Armco bought it in 1956. It shutdown in 1983. [upi]

I found this location by going upstream along the Ship Channel. The top photo and a satellite image confirms the location.
