IPL = Indianapolis Power and Light
This plant began operations in 1931, but the first four units were retired a while ago. [TransmissionHub]
The plant converted all three remaining units from coal to natural gas by 2016.
"unit 5: 114 MW (1958), unit 6: 114 MW (1961), unit 7: 471 MW (1973)" [gem]
3 of the 24 groundwater monitoring wells have detected excessive amounts of antimony. [AshTracker]
Lane Miller posted Indianapolis Power and Lights turbine from 1900. Dan McQuade: Used to work in this plant, that was brought in as a display in 1931 when the first two units were built. Very cool piece of history. |

Judging from the cute little white smokestacks, did they put the new natural gas boilers in the old building?

This new building in their "front yard" is labeled "Solar photovoltaic power plant" by Google Maps. It sure didn't look like solar panels. But then I saw the sign with street view that says "IPL ADVANCION - ENERGY STORAGE ARRAY." That makes a lot of sense because the problem with solar power is that the sun doesn't shine while lights are turned on.

Charlie Nye via IndyStar [This May 2015 article has a lot of information. It also has "limited articles." And evidently it disappears from the web page after a while.] |
I grabbed an older image that shows the coal handling conveyors and water vapor coming out of the smokestack.
