Meridian, IL: Old Wood Grain Elevator

(Satellite)

Meridian is another Illinois town where the grain elevator is almost bigger than the town. Although Meridian is real close to Mendota in terms of gas stations, fast food, etc. I'm surprised that this grain elevator can compete with the ADM elevator that is less than a mile down the road and closer to the interstate exit.

The storage capacity is 2,568,000. [gfai]

Dennis DeBruler: And an old wood grain elevator that is still in good shape. In fact, according to the downspouts from the leg, it is still being used. Thanks for including the grain elevator in the framing.
Alan Fricker: Dennis DeBruler, did you notice there's no railroad siding to that elevator? I'll bet there was one there 80 years ago.
Mike Landers: To the left where the tree line starts is where the Depot once was
Mike Landers: Alan Fricker You better look again it there look close u can still see the tracks.

I've noticed that Class I railroads sometimes retain that part of a siding that doesn't cross a road for temporarily storing maintenance-of-way equipment that is in the area. But in this case it looks like they are storing boxcars.

Here’s a shot that better shows the siding.

[Note the truck load-out spout coming from the old elevator. As one would expect in Nov, these are loaded trucks coming to unload.]

This photo is not of this elevator, but I include it because it shows that not all farmers have bought an 18-wheeler and got a Commercial Drivers License. That is, they still use a tractor and gravity wagon.
