The first Van Buren Station (aka LaSalle Street Station) was actually built for the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railroad, with the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific as a tenant. It replaced a smaller station located at 22nd Street. The Rock Island had completed the trackage from Englewood to the city limits prior to completion of their own route beyond that point to accommodate entry of the LS&MS into Chicago.
Completed on April, 16th 1866 in the “Franco-Italian” style, it measured 542 feet by 60 feet. The Great Fire of 1871 destroyed the station which was quickly rebuilt using the original plans with some minor modifications.
