Lafayette, IN: Monon Street Running and Depot

Some of this content was moved from Extreme Team Tracks.

(Update: Monon also did street running in Bloomington, IN.)

Before I found reference material that indicated the Monon used 5th street in Lafayette, I looked at a 1970 aerial map to try to determine its old route. The resolution was not good enough. But you can see the old Wabash alignment through town. The new alignments along the river route the tracks under the Wabash River road bridges. Thus several grade crossings, as well as street running, is eliminated.

L&N/Monon used to run in a street in Lafayette, IN, and the Amtrak "station" was a hotel. Here we see Amtrak 218 pulling #317, The Hoosier State, into town. These tracks have since been relocated along the Wabash River.

The former Monon station in Lafayette Indiana. They left a section of track in the street in front of it to remember the street running days through town.

This looks like the building on the right in Steven's photo. I wonder what the time frame was of using this building vs. the hotel in Doug's photo. Richard indicates the building is not used as a performing arts center.

We have some great pictures of Monon’s Lafayette Depot, this week’s Monon Monday. There’s a wonderful map of Lafayette too.
The passenger depot sits at the southwest corner of 5th and North Streets, with the Monon running down 5th Street.
Hope you enjoy the map and pictures 📸 There’s always more in the archives! 😊
Mark Niceley: Does the Lahr Hotel still stand. I know for many years, it was the defacto Lafayette train station for the Floridian in Amtrak days.
David LaGuire: Mark Niceley yes, still there today.

Paul Robinson: I lived in that Spanish style, 3 story apartment building across from the Monon station from 1992 to 1995. My wife managed the apartments for Don Stein, who owned the property. It was his premium rental property at that time. We were told the apartment house once served as a brothel. Lovely ladies hung off these balconies, enticing men getting off the trains at the station. Makes a great story, but do not know if it was true.

Michael Scrogham: newest car i see in this pic is a 1957 fairlane,i once had one so i recognize the year. so,,i would think about 1958,or 1959,because the 1957 models came out in the fall of 1957,like they always do.

My photo of Amtrak passing the station on May 9, 1987.

The dashes in 5th Street indicates street running.
