This junction is where the TRRA (Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis) joined a corridor of trunk lines. The trunk lines, from west to east, were C&A (later GM&O), Big Four (later NYC) and Wabash. The C&A and Big4 tracks were shared and operated jointly with southbound traffic on the C&A and northbound traffic on the Big4. The CB&Q had trackage rights on the C&A and the C&EI had trackage rights on the Big4. [
ChicagoRailfan and 2005 SPV Map] The C&A and Big4 tracks are now jointly operated by the UP and KCS. The Wabash route is now owned by Norfolk Southern.
I highlighted the location of the tower with a yellow rectangle.

As expected, there are a lot fewer tracks today.
