"The station lost its purpose when, under pressure from New Jersey, the Vineland Municipal Electric Utility quit using coal after 2010."
Dennis DeBruler
The utility lost 25mw of steam-driven power, but they still manage:
- 4.3mw hydropower
- A 1994 46.5mw cogeneration plant that provides electricity for the city and steam to Progresso Quality (now F&S Fresh Foods)
- 2012 68mw natural gas and fuel oil peaker
- 2015 natural-gas 73mw Clayville Power Station
- 16mw solar farms and "18 MW of customer behind the meter and grid solar projects within the city"
In summary, they have a generating capacity of 133mw Summer/143mw Winter.

Actually, in 2010 they converted the remaining coal-fired unit (25mw built in 1970) to gas. [gem-HowardDown]

I'm saving an image since the plant will be disappearing. The railroad that passes their former coal storage facility was the Central Railroad of New Jersey. (I keep forgetting that the coal-storage pile for a small generator can be small. 25mw is very small for the 21st Century.) And the railroad that went up Blvd three blocks east of the power plant was Pennsylvania Reading Seashore Lines. Both of those routes are label Conrail on a USGS map.

In 2012 they started up the 68mw Simple Cycle Power Plant (SCPP) Unit 11 that is on the north side of Perl Street. [gem-HowardDown-peaker] A simple cycle unit is basically a jet engine geared to a generator and they are quite inefficient. But they can fire up very quickly (just a few minutes) compared to a steam-driven plant. That is why they are normally just peaker plants. It is a strong statement about the price of electricity on the east coast that sometimes this inefficient plant can provide baseline power cheaper than the wholesale market. ("When electricity prices are high in the wholesale market, Vineland’s new plant will be able to generate energy at a lower cost, saving the residents money." [SourceOne])

Since the generation division was using the old building for storage, workshop and office space, they bought a building in 2021 to house that division.
