WorthPoint 1946 PRESS PHOTO UNITED STATES TROOPS GUARD POND RIVER COLLIERY COAL MINE IN KY |
The lack of land reclamation is consistent with the 1940s. The Pond River Colliers' tipple was
the brown spots to the right of the middle of this aerial and south of the IC tracks.
Now there is a rail loadout facility to the left of the middle that is served by CSX/L&N and PAL/IC. I think it is loading coal from underground mines. [
YellowPages] There are, and were, some significant conveyor belts feeding the loadout.
East Diamond
While looking for Pond River Collier, I found the East Diamond Coad Mine.
The above aerial photo shows that the white rectangle across the tracks near the right side of this map was the tipple. The mine had connections to both the L&N and the IC. It was an underground mine. [

Both
The 2005 SPV Map shows that there were several mines between Madisonville and Central City. I think Pond River Colliers was the spur going south from the IC near the hill on the right. East Dimond is the mine in the upper-left quadrant of this map.

There was a lot of strip mining in this area.
Bonus
The White City, KY, that Google Maps knows about is not even close to US-41. So I'm tossing this in here because it was in the Madison newspaper.
