The abandoned railyard to the east of the older yard was the Western Railway of Alabama railyard.

To cut costs, L&N simplified their great gray and yellow scheme several times. Briefly, cost-cutting steps included eliminating the black outlining of yellow areas, simplifying letters/numbers and 'pine tree' nose treatment, and halting use of ScotchLite. Finally - in a preview of CSX stealth scheme - diesels were painted solid gray except for numbers and lettering.

The coaling tower caught my eye. Because of the shadow, it is easy to identify its location near the top of this aerial photo.

The roundhouse was south of the turntable. Does anybody know what the storage tracks in the upper-left corner of this map was used for? 1958 would have been way too early for intermodal and that is too big to be team tracks.

That storage area was still being used in 1972.
