Note in the above photo that the town was built around the canal. Now, nothing of a downtown is left. It appears that as the old canal died, so did Fultonville. And Fonda, north of the river, became the commercial center for the area.

The current Erie Canal uses the river in this area. The dashed, double-blue line just north of the southern NYC route is labeled ABANDONED CANAL.
