Lauren Stroz added Peabody coal Baldwin DRS6-6-1500 (Originally built for Kaiser Steel) at their mine in Baldwin, Illinois. July 13th, 1976. By John C. Benson. Lauren Stroz shared |
The silo in the above photo is gone, but some remnants of the facility that loaded trains on Peabody's own PCCX Railroad still exist. Originally, I thought this was simply a loadout. But now I think it was the Randalph Preparation Plant. That is, it cleaned the coal as well as loaded it onto trains.

The 1976-92 River King #6 mine was a strip mine, and the 1972-93 Baldwin and 1979-99 Marissa coal mines were underground. The were all served by this preparation plant. Conveyors brought the coal from the shafts for the underground mines to the plant.

The ISGS topo maps are rather busy and it is hard to see the elevated conveyor belt that went from the preparation plant, across the Baldwin Mine and to the Marissa Mine. So I include regular topo maps.

That conveyor still has a landscar on the west side.

Since the conveyor was in operation until 1999, I checked out Google Earth. I captured it from the 45-degree slope in the lower-left corner to the Marrisa Mine shaft in the upper-right corner.
