The CB&Q depot in Mount Ayr, Iowa was reconstructed in 1916-17. The lobby end and freight end were switched and 20 feet was added onto the freight end. I believe that's the reason for this photo being shot from the rear.

1914 - The photographer is shooting west from the newly constructed water tower in Mount Ayr, Iowa. We get a good look at the stock pens and reservoir and the CB&Q depot. Passenger train is westbound.

CB&Q depot in Mt. Ayr, Iowa. It went out of service in 1968, was restored in the 1990s, and is seen here on January 20, 2022.

It took me a while to locate the depot because it is not clear how the CB&Q got through town. There are no detailed topo maps available that are old enough to show it.

The Ringgold Trailway was the CB&Q route. The railroad used to go through town and on down to Grant City. But that segment had already been abandoned by 1955. (It always disturbs me when I see a railroad labeled BN before the BN was created.) 1955 Nebraska City Quad @ 250,000

Somehow the CB&Q worked its way north to go by the water tower and depot and then went further north because it left town north of Columbus Street.

Mt. Ayr was on a branch that was off a branch, https://collections.carli.illinois.edu/.../knx_rail/id/298. That helps explain why CB&Q abandoned the route through town so early.
[The south end of the twig (branch off of a branch) was Albany, MO.]

Here's a cool photo of the CB&Q depot in Mount Ayr, Iowa about 1958. The large building in the picture was built in 1957 as a fertilizer and seed warehouse. The husband and wife team who owned the elevator were both pilots and I believe they were shooting their new building and got the depot in the picture.

I noticed the feed mill in the background of Michael's photo, so I checked it out. There is also a ready-mix plant on that side of town.

There are regular grain storage elevators on the south side of town.

Bonus: Kellerton, IA is the next town east
