Chicago & North Western Historical Society posted Someone wanted to see a photo of the C&NW facility in Missouri Valley, Iowa. Here are two shots. The large one is of the shops area taken probably around 1909 or so by an unknown photographer. The small photo in the upper right was taken by Charles Stecher probably in the later 1920s. |

Tom Edwards commented on the above post Here are bits of two 1913 Sanborn fire insurance maps that I've pieced together showing part of the shops area, part of the yard, and the depot with it's associated "Miller's Depot Eating House." Unfortunately Sanborn didn't make a map of the roundhouse area which would have been to the left (west) of the shops. |
I started with a 1965 aerial because it had a scale of 21,600. The roundhouse is gone, which is expected. But so is the depot, which is not expected. And, unlike the Sanborn Map, 6th Street crosses the tracks.
So I accessed an older aerial. We can see that the west side of the roundhouse was still standing. And there are some buildings between the tracks on the west side of 6th Street. But I can't reconcile them with the depot photo and Sanborn Map.

In the background of the top photo, just to the left of the smokestack, there appears to be the headhouse of a grain elevator. So was that the current elevator with a roof on top?
This is Google Map's "signature photo" for the town. I looked for it on a satellite map, but I could not find it.
While looking for the caboose, I spotted the
Watson Steam Train & Depot on the west side of town. This photo would be when a Big Boy excursion came through town. I wonder if it was
this one.
Now that I learned about lagoons for wastewater reclamation because of
Sun Tan Valley, AZ, I spotted lagoons for this town.
