Wandermore's Visit627Kansas posted Dorinda Carlson: My great grandpa JW Gormley’s grocery store after the railroad shut down. So many memories there growing up….looks very dilapidated in this picture now. Mike Bartels shared Old Burlington depot, White Cloud, Kan. Line from Atchison, Kan., to Rulo, Neb., through White Cloud abandoned in 1933. Depot later moved up to main street and once used as an antique store. Supposedly some work has been done on the building since this photo was made early in 2023. |
The grain elevator has grown to be rather big considering it doesn't have any rail service. I checked a satellite image to verify that it doesn't have a barge loading facility.

This is an example of another CB&Q route that was made obsolete by paved roads. As Mike stated, it was abandoned during the Depression. The route on the east of the river has survived.

Because it was abandoned in 1933, I have to use an old topo map to find this CB&Q route. I'm shocked that the route was labelled Missouri Pacific because that is a significant error. The MP route was further west of this route. I've seen CB&Q routes labelled BN, but this is the first time I've seen a route labeled with the wrong corporate lineage. Note how several railroads converged at Troy so that they could share a bridge across the Missouri river. I've seen indications that CB&Q had trackage rights on the Rock Island so that it could access the four routes that go to St. Joseph, MO. At the north end of this branch, it crossed the river on the Rulo Bridge; and at the south end, it probably shared the Atchison Bridge.
