Michael Emerson Avitt posted November 6, 2014 - former CB&Q depot at Stockport, Iowa. |
There is another grain elevator across the street from the depot.
This town is another example of the CB&Q abandoning alot of routes in Iowa long before the Interstate highways were built. This town is on a route that used to go between Batavia, IA, and Fort Madison. In this satellite image, we see evidence of the route (treelines) east of town but not west of town because the route to the west was abandoned by CB&Q, but the route to the east was abandoned later by the Burlington Northern. [2004 SPV Map]
The route to the west was gone by 1958.

Once again we see the error of a topo map using a railroad name long before the railroad existed. A more recent map has the correct name. By the 1981 topo map, the route to the east is labeled as an "old railroad grade."

I included the towns of Birmingham and Hillsboro in the topo maps because that is what shows up on this timetable style map.
According to the timetable map, this route crossed a north/south route in Cottonwood. But I could not find Cottonwood on Google Maps. In fact, the routes crossed south of Houghton, IA.
